Walk Sunday March 24th 2024
Posted on: Sun 24th March 1:22am
What it says on the calendar and what we are actually doing is a bit different. You see, Eugene was to lead a walk on the 28th April at the Cavan Burren, but unfortunately he is going to Cuba on that very day. We tried to persuade him to cancel that, but to no avail. So he is doing it this Sunday the 24th and the Edenbaun walk will be done in April.
This walk starts at the source of the Shannon, known as the "Shannon Pot" From here, the Cavan Way takes you along a route which passes numerous sites of archaeological interest dating from 4,500 B.C. the beginning of the neolithic period and incorporates megalithic tombs, sweat houses, cairns and hut sites. An opportunity to visit the geopark, the walk is 12km long on roughish terrain, so you would need to be fit for this. It is a "there and back" walk. Plan is to meet Crescent, Boyle at 10:30am or at the Shannon Pot carpark at 12 noon. The Shannon Pot can be found on Google Maps but basically you want to pass through Manorhamilton on the N16 and the easiest way is to turn right on the R206 just before Blacklion. Follow this road and you will hit the spot. And although it is slightly longer than turning off before, it is probably the most straightforward way without getting lost. ( I speak for myself) So there you go.
More details?? Phone Eugene 086 256 0400 and don't forget to sympathise with him about his trip to Cuba. As Zita is up for this walk the canal walk is deferred unless someone else wants to take it. If you do, let me know ASAP
