Posted on: Sat 25th July 4:35pm
This week, we have a walk with Tom 087 237 9632. Up to the Caves of Kesh at the west of the Bricklieves. These are a series of 16 limestone caves, some interconnecting. They have been excavated over the years and the remains of numerous animals, including bear, ox, goat, pig, bear reindeer, AND, wait for it, Arctic lemming, found for the first time in Ireland. Also, the 4 oldest types of molluscs, the remains of several fish, numerous birds, including ptarmigan, smew and little auk. More recently, human remains and relics were found. The site was thought to be used for ancient religious practices. The caves are also featured in Irish mythology. (Thanks Marian O'Dowd et al)
Not a long walk, but a steep climb at the start and Tom will take us up the track, and then a circuit around the top to the cairn, down the East side and back to cars. Highest point 359m. About 8km and a duration of 3 hours.
Meet Crescent, Boyle at 11am or 11:30 am at the church at Kesh. Any queries?? Phone Tom
